Dear Editor,
Tomorrow, Barack Obama’s improbable journey to become president of the United States would finally come to an end after two years of laborious campaigning. And when the dust would have settled, I firmly believe that Obama would be the victorious contender. Of course, this is a view I’ve held since before the start of the Democratic Primary contest (SN, 30.12.07) when many felt that Mr. Obama had only a twilight of a chance. Many failed to locate the pulse of Americans and the changing dynamics of the country, while some held on to the simplistic belief that white Americans would never vote for someone outside of their race for the highest office in the land. My only concern is the debris and wreckage that would have been left of the McCain’s campaign and the Republican Party after hurricane Obama would have stormed through Election Day.
Some skeptics are still to be convinced that Obama can actually pull it out, while some believe that the margin of victory will be a narrow one. For me, I predict a landslide for Obama (somewhere in the range of 320-350 electoral votes in his favour). Many factors can be cited for this, but mainly located in the fact that the economy is in shambles and Obama’s ground organization and money are unmatchable and unprecedented. Oh, and not to forget to mention, John McCain’s selection of the incoherent and incompetent running mate, Sarah Palin.
In some ways, after the 8 years of the disastrous George Bush, the US reputation and standing has reached a high point of decrepitude and only an Obama victory on Tuesday can begin to restore some form of balance.
Yours faithfully,
Clinton Urling
