– Ramsaroop
The fight for free voices in the local media must continue in memory of Stabroek News Editor-in-chief David de Caires businessman Peter Ramsaroop has said.
He said de Caires’ goals as a press freedom advocate would only be accomplished if the fight persists, particularly as it relates to the private sector gaining access to local radio, and “government not trying to influence or punish independent papers through the pulling of advertising”.
Ramsaroop said that he will miss de Caires’ personal counsel and advice on local politics, adding that he is saddened by the passing of such a dynamic individual at a critical time in the nation’s history. He recalled that de Caires had given him a business column in Stabroek News upon his return to Guyana in 2003. “I will cherish that for the rest of my life.”
He expressed his deepest sympathies to the family — his wife (Doreen) and his children.
