Bakewell Buxton Stars and former champions Victoria Kings each recorded victories when action in the East Coast Demerara Football Association (ECDFA)/Mackeson Stout-sponsored Premier League competition continued at the BV/Triumph United ground on Sunday.
Playing in the first game of the double header, Victoria Kings, who are now in third position on 13 points and with no chance of overhauling surprise points leaders Buxton United (19), scored a two-nil victory over Ann’s Grove.
The 2006 champions fielded a team which was made up of their under-20 players and totally dominated the game, although the scorecard did not reflect that fact.
So dominant were they that their opponents found it hard to penetrate the defence and the game was played in Ann’s Grove’s half.
A Donald Lutchman strike in the 50th minute followed by a defence error, were the contributing factors to Victoria Kings’ victory.
In the feature game of the day, Bakewell Buxton Stars instilled a 7-1 defeat on a hapless Black Stallion unit.
Ruben Morris got the ball rolling for his team, when he found the back of the net in the 21st minute. The diminutive looking Pierre Joseph made it two-nil eight minutes later before Neville Gulliver scored his two goals seven minutes apart which ensured Bakewell Buxton a 4-0 lead at lemon time.
After the break, Black Stallion were able to reduce the deficit to three, when Dwayne Robertson found the back of the net in the 53rd minute, but their hopes were short-lived as Rawle Fredericks (66th), Omari Nkosi (71st) and Sherwin Griffith (75th) ensured Bakewell Buxton Stars the victory and sole owners of the second place position behind their junior counterparts.
Action in the league will continue on Thursday with another double header at the Plaisance Community Centre ground.
In the first game from 18:00hrs, Kings will take on Black Stallion while Mahaica Determinators and home team Plaisance will battle in the second encounter from 20:00hrs.
The final round action will switch to the Buxton ground on Sunday where defending champions BV/Triumph United, who are locked on 12 points with Golden Grove and Mahaica Determinators, will oppose the team that relieved them of their title, Buxton United from 14:00hrs while the Bakewell Buxton Stars/Plaisance clash will bring down the curtains on the tournament.
