Chairman of Vision Guyana Peter Ramsaroop has announced that within two months the richest circle tennis (rounders) tournament in Guyana’s history will get underway.
The competition, which will be worth one million dollars, will be played at the youth level.
According to Ramsaroop, Vision Guyana was looking at reviving one or more sports that are dormant presently with the aim of getting youths involved in sports.
“These games will be organized at the youth level with primary and secondary schools being targeted,” Ramsaroop said.
The reason for this Ramsaroop said was to “have team work, physical education and leadership qualities being displayed at an early age.”
Presently there are no associations but talks with the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association had started for them to be part of the management structure of the body for now.
According to Ramsaroop the whole tournament is to foster youth initiative.
He added that unlike other tournaments where huge sums are announced a greater portion of the $1,000,000 on offer will go towards prize money with the aim of running off not just any other competition but one that will be extremely competitive.
The part of the money that will not be used as prize money will be used to spread the game in numerous communities as their will need to be organizations in place and also equipment will have to be purchased and handed over to these new youth groups that will be involved.
