Dear Editor,
On behalf of the entire family, friends and members of the basketball fraternity we would like to thank all the media houses, both print and electronic, especially Kaieteur News, for following our son Kevin Worrell’s demise during a basketball game on Burnham Court.
The most shocking note in relation to this was the total absence of, or any word from, the Minister of Sport, Director of Sport, Chairman of the National Sports Commission or a representative from any of these offices.
Not a sympathy card. Not a call.
The Minister of Sport and the Director of Sport were both very vocal when Guyana won the male basketball tournament at last year’s Inter-Guiana Games about all the support they were going to give the sport.
There was one week of mourning which was a nightly vigil held at the Burnham Court. This was possible through the support of family members, Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club and Courts Guyana Inc. On not one night or even on the day of the funeral was there any indication that there was a government with sports on its present agenda.
Of course one wonders why?
Is it because it’s not a cricketer, hockey player, badminton player or squash player who died while playing the game they love, or is it because it’s basketball being played on Burnham Court?
If not from the Minister of Sport or Director of Sport, a card or a call would have been appreciated from someone from their offices, indicating that we do have a government with sport on its agenda.
Our heartfelt gratitude for all the support and comfort offered by Chairman Dennis Clarke, Coach Bobby Cadogan, and members of the Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club, Courts Guyana Inc, Laparkan, and all those who shared our grief whether physically or in thought.
