Assistant manager on $400,000 bail over $4M store larceny

The assistant manager of the shopping centre, Household Plus, who is accused of stealing over $4M from the store, was placed on $400,000 bail yesterday when she appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jasmattie Sanichar of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny by clerk or servant when it was read to her.

It is alleged that between September 17 and October 11 Sanichar stole over $4.2M in cash from Household Plus.
Sanichar’s lawyer applied for bail for her on the grounds that she was not a flight risk, arguing that if granted bail she would return to court.

Manager Nazir Mohamed of Household Plus stated that he would usually go overseas on business and leave Sanichar in charge of the financial transactions of the business. He stated that when he returned Sanichar left the workplace with the excuse that she was sick. He also said that he never saw her after that day and when he finally checked the financial records of the company, he discovered the money missing. Mohamed made a report to the police station about the incident and  Sanichar was later arrested and charged.

The magistrate subsequently placed Sanichar on bail and transferred the case to Court Three for December 2.
