Dear Editor,
Mr David de Caires, Editor-in-Chief of Stabroek News, has made a significant contribution to Guyana, ensuring that a public space has been provided for all who have different pints of view on critical issues facing Guyana. For example, when other newspapers carried inaccuracies on the performance of Gaibank, and they did not give me a chance as General Manager to respond, it was Mr de Caires who offered me the space to present what would have been kept from the public domain.
It should be stated that I had never met Mr de Caires, but I think I had a good sense of who he was as a person and as a Guyanese, having read the Stabroek News and considered it to be the best proxy for understanding his balanced approach and what he brought to the table at a critical time in Guyana’s history.
His enduring legacy, no doubt, must include his work on building a free press in Guyana, a platform on which the future of Guyana rests.
My deepest sympathy is extended to his wife and family. May his work never die! May he Rest in Peace.
Yours faithfully,
Dr C Kenrick Hunte
