The Leonora Youths Sports Club (LYSC) made their way into the knockout stage of the Guyana Softball League (GSL) organized Memorex Enterprise 15-over countrywide softball tournament when they defeated Parika/Hydronie SC at the Den Amstel ground.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, LYSC accumulated a mammoth total of 223 – 5 in 15 overs which proved too much for the opposition who fell 37 runs short of the target.
Led by two brilliant innings of 68 and 62 by Ravindra Ramnaraine and Mahendra Persaud, LYSC quickly catapulted their way past 200, compliments of the 109-run partnership Ramnaraine and Persaud put together in eight overs.
PHSC’s seamer Kenneth Persaud was the most successful bowler with figures of 3-38. LYSC’s Mahendra Persaud was PHSC’s chief destroyer who put up a good all round performance by taking 3-12 to add to his innings of 62.
The unsuccessful team was on course with the run rate but they also suffered a crude twist of fate by losing three wickets via the run-out route. The wicket of top scorer Vickram Kissoon who made a blistering 46 which included six sixes and a four was one of those three wickets, leading to their eventual collapse of 186 in the 14th over.
In PHSC’s first match they inflicted a 49-run beating on Young Challengers as they had the opportunity to bat first. They set a challenging target of 137 for victory but PHSC could only manage to get to 136 against the bowling attack of Pooran Balkarran and Selochan Shivdar who grabbed 3-18 and 3-32 respectively.
The Young Challengers after being 65-3 at one stage were undone by some good fielding by the opposition SC as YC’s task slipped further out of sight when they suffered three run-outs in the tenth over.
They eventually were stopped at 87, compliments of Khrishendat Narinedat and Dhanraj Dookie who claimed 3-11 and 3-25 respectively.
Young Challengers in their second match gained a walkover from Shattazville who failed to have the required seven players at the required time for the commencement of the match.
Meanwhile, the matches to be contested on November 11 are Wolf Warriors and Street Boys XI clashing at the Den Amstel ground and Rangers Sports Club and Ruimzeight Sports Club battling at the Leonora Sports Club ground with both matches commencing at 9am.
