The annual Mayor’s Cup seven-a-side football competition for Inter-Ward/Street/Village teams is scheduled to commence shortly in honour of Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green who celebrated his 74th birthday yesterday.
According to organizer Lennox Arthur, this year’s tournament is set to commence on November 18 and finish on December 20.
In between that, last year’s unfinished tournament will be completed. Arthur said last year’s tournament, which he said was not completed because of the weather, will now be played on Friday at the Banks DIH Thirst Park venue. According to Arthur, the teams which will be in action on Friday are Tiger Bay, Mocha, North East La Penitence, Timehri, Plaisance, Goed Fortuin, Laing Avenue and Sophia. At stake will be a first prize of $120,000 and a trophy while the losing finalist will receive $50,000 and a trophy.
In addition A. H. Sports will donate 10 pairs of football boots to the winning team.
Among the players expected to be on show are Solomon Austin, Vibert Weekes, Anthony Harding, Royston Burgess, Sheldon Shepherd, Sheldon Hope, Sceyon Hope, Shawn Bishop, Devon Millington, Shem Arthur and Gregory Denny.
