A woman was granted bail while two policemen were remanded to prison on Monday for allegedly stealing a quantity of items valued over $1M from a man, whom they had allegedly conspired to prosecute for an offence he did not commit, when they appeared before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Sabatri Singh, 23, of 48 Triumph, East Coast Demerara and Andre Lakeram, 20, of Golden Fleece, West Bank Berbice were not required to plead to the indictable charge of larceny from a dwelling house.
Lakeram and Sirdartha Parsamen, 28, of Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara were not required to plead to the indictable charge of conspiracy to procure an innocent person.
It was alleged that between January 2 and September 8 at Enmore, East Coast Demerara, Singh stole $650,000 from Meer Ali.
It was also alleged between January 2 and September 8, Singh along with Lakeram stole a quantity of items valued over $1M from Ali.
It was further alleged that on September 9 at Enmore, Lakeram along with Parsamen conspired together to prosecute Ali on a charge of possession of narcotics knowing that he was innocent of the offence.
Attorney-at-law Vic Puran, representing the accused, stated that the allegations against Singh, was as a result of her present relationship with Lakeram some time after she had ended a relationship with Ali.
Puran said Singh had been kept in police custody for five days and was later granted station bail in the sum of $20,000. Puran also stated that Lakeram and Parsamen were both strong members of the Guyana Police Force and if they were granted bail they would return to court. The defence attorney then applied for bail for the trio.
The prosecution objected to bail stating that the court should consider the amount of money involved.
The magistrate subsequently granted Singh bail in the sum of $100,000. However, she ordered that Lakeram and Parsamen be remanded to prison. The trio will return to court on November 24.
