A man was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle after warning his attacker to leave his wife alone.
Brian Gray, called ‘Jessie’, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, was stabbed in his neck and slashed across his right ear. The attack occurred around 7 pm on Sunday.
Gray, 38, told Stabroek News that he was pushing his bicycle along the road when his attacker, who was drinking in the company of friends, shoved him down. Before he could have gotten up, the man hit him in his head with a bottle, which broke. The attacker, who was being prompted by his friends, then used the broken bottle to carry out the assault.
Recounting how the incident occurred, Grey explained that he was on his way home after accompanying a friend to his house when he confronted the attacker, who had interfered with his wife on more than one occasion. He said he “told the man nicely not to interfere with me wife again when she passing because she don’t like it and he get vex…”
Gray who slashes grass from residents’ yards for a living said that he hurt his back during the fall. He also told this newspaper yesterday that while bleeding profusely he ran home a short distance away.
His reputed wife, Lilowattie ‘Desiree’ Persaud and his brother rushed him to the New Amsterdam Hospital. He was treated and admitted a patient but by midday the following day the doctors felt he was fit to be discharged.
However, when this newspaper contacted him yesterday he related that “blood was still seeping through the stitches.” He said too that he was experiencing tremendous pain and was unable to eat and move around.
Meanwhile, Gray’s attacker was arrested and placed on $10,000 station bail on Tuesday. According to a senior police officer in Berbice, the man is expected to be charged tomorrow.
Gray, a father of four, said he would not be able to work again for another two months. Besides, he said “the little savings I had run down and I don’t want to ask anyone for help.”
