– Madhoo looking to win tournament after success in 2003
Newly crowned 2008 Darts Champion Sudesh Fitzgerald and former champion Norman Madhoo yesterday departed for Barbados to participate in the Bryden’s Invitational Darts tournament and the Caribbean/South American Masters.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport before his departure Madhoo declared: “It is time to take back the crown as it has been too long.”
Madhoo won the inaugural tournament in 2003 but was defeated in 2004.
Barbadian Anthony Forde, a two-time winner is the defending champion.
Madhoo expects tough competition from 2005 champion Winston Cadogan and 2006 champion Vivekanand Dyal.
Other top players taking part are Rahaman Hassanali and Troy Bhujwan of Trinidad, Roger Edwards and Gregory Catlyn of Barbados and Linus Theophilu and Anthony Wilkey of St. Lucia.
Guyana has one of the smallest contingents which was blamed on the lack of sponsorship.
Fitzgerald is being sponsored by Max Rambharose of Lens and Floyd Jaundoo of the USA while Madhoo is self sponsored.
The winner of the Caribbean/South American Masters will receive 3,500 pounds.
The tournament is a prerequisite to the Ladbrook World Darts Championship in England which will be staged later this year.
