GFF orders rematch for Alpha United and Sunburst Camptown
– final billed for November 30
After the recent twists and turns in the Fruta Conquerors (FC) Namilco Football Festival the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Executive Committee has ruled that the semi-final match between Alpha United and Sunburst Camptown is to be replayed.
General Secretary of the GFF Noel Adonis contacted FC’s President on Wednesday via email and gave him the final ruling on the Alpha United and Sunburst Camptown encounter.
The rematch is set to be contested on Sunday at the Tucville playfield at 8:00pm.
Fruta Conquerors will take on Buxton United in a supporting match at 6:00pm while the victor of Alpha/ Camptown encounter will face BK International Western Tigers in the final of the tournament which is billed for November 30 at the National Stadium.
Alpha and Sunburst Camptown clashed on November 7 at the floodlit Tucville playfield in one of the tournament’s semi-finals which was not concluded owing to a power outage resulting from a blown transformer that affected lighting at the ground. Approximately some 17 minutes remained in regulation time with Alpha leading 2 – 1 when the area suffered a power outage.
The organizers subsequently ruled that the match must be replayed the following day, Saturday.
However, the rescheduled match was not played because Alpha failed to show up, protesting the format of play put in place by the organizers (FC) which required them to play three matches back-to-back which was against FIFA regulations.
Sunburst Camptown were then given a walkover and they were set to contest the final last Sunday against BK International Western Tigers but the Guyana Football Referees Council told organizer Marlan Cole that they would be unable to officiate in the event despite the fact that they had already been paid and the final did not come off.
Meanwhile, Cole has apologized to the GFRC for comments he made about the GFRC which he later found out had offended them during the recent situation.
Cole yesterday said that everything was in place for the tournament’s conclusion on November 30 at the Providence National Stadium with the third place showdown and final commencing at 4:00pm and 6:00pm respectively.
Between those two encounters there will be a 20-minute Pee Wee (Under-11) encounter between Fruta Conquerors and Sunburst Camptown in memory of former national football players Neil Hernandez and Delon Monderson.
