An early Sunday morning feast it was for the Wolf Warriors at the Dem Amstel ground as they tore apart their prey Street Boys in the Guyana Softball League (GSL) organized Memorex Enterprise 15-overs Countrywide Softball Tournament.
After winning the toss and putting the opposition to bat, Wolf Warriors bundled them out for a paltry 86 in 12.4 overs with a terrific bowling performance by the almost unreadable Ramesh Rambharose who grabbed 5-17 while he was supported by Cristiandial Persaud who claimed 2-15.
John Singh was the top scorer for Street Boys rustling up a fighting 29. Singh and Rakesh Gangaram who made 16 featured in a 40-run partnership made in five overs but the innings was corrupted by Rambharose who took four of his five wickets in one over.
When ‘WW’ took to the crease to begin their innings they did so in fine style with skipper Amrit ‘Rocky’ Jairam clobbering two sixes and two fours in the opening over bowled by Street Boys star, Singh.
Jairam’s opening partner Azad Azeez soon after got into the act and started belting sixes as well as taking their team to their target in just 5.4 overs with Jairam and Azeez ending unbeaten on 55 (13 balls) and 35 respectively.
Rangers Sports Club clubbed Ruimzeight Sports Club by 6 wickets at the Leonora ground in an encounter that began at 8:30am.
Ruimzeight SC took first strike and posted a low total of 109in 14.3 overs against the fiery attack of Diaram Persaud who took 4-7 while Mohanram Chaitram and Anand Bharat contributed two combating totals of 28 and 20 respectively.
Demerara’s reigning club champion Rangers SC who won the recently concluded Banks DIH Tournament catapulted to 112, losing 4 wickets in the process. Ameer Nizamudeen top scored with 40 at the top of the batting order and was supported by Safraz Karim (22) who put together a 60-run partnership that took the fight out of the Ruimzeight team.
Hustlers XI outdid the Leonora Youths Sports Club on their home turf in the feature match of the day by 26 runs.
Hustler’s Lakhan Mohammed and Raheem Ally both contributed scores of 30 while Altaz Trotz supported with 22 in their team total of 147 made at the cost of four wickets. LYSC bowling attack was led by Rajin Rahaman who claimed 3-22.
LYSC crumbled to 121 in 14.5 overs after being 73-3 in seven overs. A poor selection of shots was the main factor responsible for their downfall.
Hustler’s Aswerdeen Haniff who started with five wides in his first over eventually got his line correct and destroyed the opposition by grabbing 5-29.
Hustlers XI will now advance to the second knockout stage where they will face Rangers Sports Club this Sunday. The knockout stage in the Georgetown Zone will also be played Sunday at Eve Leary ground.
