Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud commissioned a $40 million water project at Moblissa, Region Ten yesterday in an effort to further spur redevelopment in the area.
The Moblissa Water Project is supported by the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP). According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release issued yesterday the water project comprises independent water systems.
These systems include a well and above-ground storage reservoir; solar-driven pumps; and discharge taps. The design of the system caters for both domestic and agriculture use and will service the Moblissa population of about 200; many of whom are dairy farmers.
Now that it has a permanent water supply Moblissa is being considered for alternative sources of energy via the establishment of wind farms, GINA stated. Residents have also requested improvements in education and infrastructure.
Persaud, according to GINA, stated that the commissioning of the water project is an important investment and he urged residents, especially farmers, to recognize that it was done with the aim of improving their self-sufficiency.
“When we think of developing our country, we must think about people moving away from the coast and popularizing the hinterland…the next logical areas for us to look to populate and develop,” Hinds said yesterday.
According to GINA, Moblissa which is a small village located 15 miles east of Linden Highway was once a thriving dairy community and the government is determined to return it to this former state. The Livestock Development Company (LIDO) fueled the village’s early stages of development in 1975 by supporting its social, infrastructural and dairy development.
LIDCO managed the Moblissa Dairy Complex from 1975 to 2001 but the village lost its development momentum through the migration of its population, GINA said. However, resurgence through investment and resources input has revitalized the community.
Mortimer Mingo, Chairman of Region Ten; representatives of the Moblissa Water Users Association (MWUA); and members of LEAP were also present at the occasion yesterday.
