Berbice under-19 all rounder Alex Amsterdam, national under-19 players Anthony Bramble and Eugene La Fleur and former national under-19 off spinner Orvin Mangru all shared the spotlight when action in the Berbice zone of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Gafoor’s 20/20 first division competition continued last weekend.
Amsterdam scored a pugnacious 79 and, together with Bramble who made 59, posted 109 for the first wicket from 12.1 overs for Scottsburg United, who won the toss and batted.
They eventually scored 179-4 from their 20 overs against Skeldon Community Centre at the Scottsburg ground.
Jermaine Reid took 2-26 for Skeldon, who were bowled out for 126 from 18 overs in reply.
Gary Phillips, 31, and Reid 21, were the principal scorers while Junior Mc Almont claimed 3-17 for Scottsburg United.
At Cumberland, the home team Young Warriors defeated Bermine by three wickets in a nail biting finish despite an unbeaten 50 from La Fleur who struck four fours and added 39 for the first wicket with Maxie De Jonge, 29.
Bermine scored 142-6 from their 20 overs as off spinner Farouk Hussein took 2-25 whilst fast bowler Kwesi Maltay supported with 2-35.
Young Warriors, in reply, scored 145-7 from 19.5 overs, thanks to Balram Samaroo’s unbeaten 28 and Berbice all rounder Paul Wintz’s 21.
Jason Sinclair and De Jonge each claimed a wicket.
In the final game of the round, Albion Community Centre easily disposed of Upper Corentyne Reform (UCR) in their encounter, winning by eight wickets at the Number 70 ground.
UCR took first strike and were bowled out for 124 from 19.2 overs with Nazim Mohammed making 32.
Mangru grabbed 5-10 from four overs.
In reply, Albion coasted to 125-2 from 17.1 overs, thanks to the batting of Ranga Lachigadoo and national under-19 all rounder Jonathan Foo who were unbeaten on 48 and 37 respectively at the end.
Meanwhile, after four rounds of action, Young Warriors and Albion Community Centre are leading Zone A and B respectively with eight points each and are assured of a semi final spot in the Berbice zone of the competition, whilst Blairmont Community Centre and Port Mourant are in the runners up position of their respective zones on four and six points each.
