Barker wins clash of titans on final night
Republican’s Jason Barker won the lone heavyweight bout of the tournament against West Side Bomber’s Troy Waldron in the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) organized Church’s Chicken Champion of Champions tournament at the National Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
Barker out boxed Waldron in a bout that saw a flurry of punches interrupted only by the bell. The match could have gone either way because of the closeness of the scoring by both boxers but Barker jumped slightly ahead after landing the harder, cleaner shots which had Waldron on the defensive.
Pan American games bronze medallist Clive Atwell, fighting out of Ricola Gym, remained unbeaten in the two night competition.,
Atwell convincingly defeated Jermaine Cort (Republican) on the final night to be crowned the top featherweight of the tournament after trouncing Jermaine Pompey (Republican) on the opening night.
Moolchan Sankar (Ricola) was adjudged the top light flyweight boxer of the tournament when he gained a hard fought victory over his taller opponent Imran Khan who made him work quite hard for the entire three rounds.
Essequibo’s Aubrey Moore and GDF’s Devon Boatswain also remained undefeated in the tournament after gaining their final victories over Bert Braithwaite (GDF) and Ryan Seales (Republican) in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions respectively.
Harpy Eagles’ Romeo Norville won the light heavyweight (178lbs) bout against Sherwin Clarke (Republican) and Delroy James also of the Republican Gym defeated his gymmate David Walters in the senior middleweight division.
In other results Marlon Daniels (Ric) defeated Wencel Thomas (FYF) in their bantamweight encounter whilst Sherwin Hope (Rep) won against his club mate Marvin Eastman in a welterweight bout.
Derek Hyman outdid Kelvin Moore in a flyweight bout.
Romel Rowley (Ric) defeated Seon Griffith (FYF) in the U-15 65-69lbs division while Kerwin Lambert (Ric) gained a victory over club-mate Godfrey Lynch and Andel Fraser (Rep) trounced Nawaz Alli in the Just Start senior lightweight category.
