Imran Khan and Christine Sukhram ran out winners of the Guyana Open Smirnoff Golf championships at the Lusignan Golf Course last week-end.
Khan (5 handicap) led after Saturday’s first round of the Men’s ‘A’ (Championship) Flight (0-9 handicap) which was badly affected by rain and was stopped by bad light on the opening day.
He ended the two-day tournament with the best gross score of 148.
Second was Vijay Deo (handicap 8), with an overall gross of 154 while third place went to former Guyana Open champion Alfred Mentore (handicap 7) who ended with 155.
Colin Ming (11 handicap) was declared winner of the men’s ‘B’ Flight (10-17 handicap) with a gross of 158 with Roger Rajkumar, 163 and Jeetendra Dhanpat, 63 second and third respectively.
In the Men’s ‘C’ Flight (18-28 handicap), Jerome Khan, playing off an 18 handicap won with the best gross of 175.
In second position was Ayube Subhan (handicap 25) with an overall gross of 191 while Andre Cummings (handicap25) who also recorded 191 was third.
The top 10 finishers in the men’s division were Imran Khan, Deo, Mentore, last year’s winner Jaipaul Seenanan, Mike Mangal, Colin Ming, M. Deonauth, Patrick Prashad, Dhanpat and Kasim Khan.
Sukhram (handicap 8) led from start to finish in the ladies’ competition.
The defending champion recorded a best gross of 156 to beat in to second position Rita Heikens (handicap 30) of the European Union who had a gross score of 206. Third was Petra Beems of Suriname (handicap 18) who closed with 183.
In the individual prize category, Ming won the best overall net flight as well as all the net and gross prizes in his flight.
Sukhram and Heikens shared several prizes in the ladies category, while Jerome Khan and Maurice Solomon were outstanding in their Flight.
The longest drive on day one went to Rajkumar while Arjune Munaf took the honours on day two.
Nearest to the pin was won by Patrick Prashad on the first day while Prem Ramnauth won on the second day.
In the ladies’ category, Joann Deo won the nearest to the pin prize on day one while Heikens won on day two.
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Banks DIH Ltd. Sales and Marketing Executive Carlton Joao and president of the Lusignan Golf Club, Mel Sankies assisted in the presentation of prizes.
The tournament was sponsored by Banks DIH Ltd. through the Smirnoff Vodka brand for the third successive year.
