Six teams will vie for the three remaining spots in the final stage of the International Football Federation’s (FIFA) World Cup qualifiers when the final matches of the CONCACAF semi-final round are contested today.
In Group `A’ all Trinidad and Tobago needs to claim a spot in the last six is a draw against Cuba in Port-of-Spain.
On the other hand, Guatemala will need to defeat the USA in Commerce City, Colorado and hope the Cubans can upset the Soca Warriors for them to be assured of a place in the final round.
The USA team has already qualified.
Group `B’ leaders Mexico, who are on 10 points, can assure themselves of the group title and a place in the next round with a draw against hosts Honduras in San Pedro Sula.
Honduras, on nine points, could progress with a win or a draw if Jamaica defeats Canada by no more than five goals.
Jamaica must beat Canada in Kingston by a significant margin and hope for either a victory by Mexico over Honduras, or for Honduras to beat Mexico by a lopsided score.
In Group `C’, Costa Rica and El Salvador, who meet today in San Salvador, are already through to the next round.
The draw for the final round of CONCACAF matches will take place on Saturday in South Africa in conjunction with the FIFA Confederations Cup draw.
Three teams from the final round will automatically qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup while the fourth-place finisher will play CONMEBOL’s fifth-place team in a two-game series in November next year for one of the last two berths in the 32-team World Cup field.
