A Jamaican man who entered Guyana illegally was ordered to pay a fine or spend six months in prison when he appeared before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Milton Grant pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal entry into Guyana.
On November 15 at the Corentyne River, Grant entered Guyana by sea without presenting himself to an immigration officer.
The prosecution stated that on the day in question around 13:00 hours, a policeman was on patrol in the Alexander Village area when he stopped a motorcar that Grant was in and conducted a search.
When Grant was asked to show his identification card he presented one from Jamaica and told the policeman that he was a Jamaican and was in Guyana for a short while. Grant then told the policeman that he had entered Guyana by the ‘backtrack’. He was arrested and later charged.
Meanwhile, Grant stated that he had entered Guyana from the Suriname border and he had left his passport with a friend in Surname. He added that he was in Guyana to visit another friend.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that Grant pay a fine of $100,000 or spend six months in prison.
