Dear Editor,
I write in relation to the Ministry of Housing notice in your paper dated November 18, 2008.
The ministry seems to be threatening to “repossess” lands which have been allotted but have not been built on or fully paid for. Will this include lands fully paid for where title documents have been issued to owners?
It is being said by the ministry’s officers that there was an agreement to build by a certain time. However, the financial situation has worsened for citizens. To alleviate the plight of many of these allottees, the government is doing its best to bring down the cost of minibus fares and flour and flour products. I guess the Minister of Housing knows full well the cost of building materials, the legal incomes of these allottees and also the impact of the 16% VAT.
President Bharrat Jagdeo, is on record as being against repossession.
Guyana has land to give to people rather than attempt to “repossess” the dreams and aspirations of the allottees.
Yours faithfully,
Veronica Ashby
