Canada’s national cricket team went home licking its wounds after going down to a New Line Cavaliers All Star cricket team on Saturday which pulled off a four-run victory in their 20/20 fixture at the Canal Number Two Sports Club ground.
The Canadians put up a good fight but the Cavaliers team which included Gajanand Singh, Christopher Barnwell and, Mahendra Nagamootoo won the game which had at stake $600,000 put up by Salim Azeez.
The Cavaliers took first strike and racked up 194-8 off 20 overs with Barnwell making 47 and Chabiraj Ramcharran, 41.
Nagamootoo chipped in with a breezy 30 as spinner Qaiser Ali captured four wickets for 11 runs.
Canada, in reply, were indebted to Abdool Samad who smashed 70 and Sandeep Jyoti, who scored 31 for their eventual total of 190-6.
Nagamootoo crowned a fine all round performance with 4-26.
The Cavaliers earned $400,000 for the win while the Canadians received $100,000.
The other $100,000 was divided among man-of-the-match and best bowler Nagamootoo and best batsman Samad.
The event will be used as a launching pad for the development of the game in West Demerara.
