Burglars broke into the home of Mayor of New Amsterdam Claude Henry and stole a quantity of personal items, including brand-name colognes, clothing, footwear and US$500.
Reports are that the mayor secured his home at Amsville Housing Scheme around 9.30 am on Monday and when he returned around 8 pm he noticed it was broken into.
Meanwhile, thieves also broke into the Evil Eyes General & Electronics store on Main Street, New Amsterdam on Monday night, carting off a quantity of electronic items and a small amount of cash.
Owner of the store, Dillip Singh said that he received a call on Monday night from two security guards on duty, who informed him that a window on the northern section of the store was broken. He hurried to his business place and discovered that the store had been ransacked and a quantity items including digital cameras, I-Pods, DVD players, cell phones, MP3 and MP4 players, flash drives, stereo systems and $40,000 cash were missing. He estimated that the break-in occurred around 11 pm.
Singh suspected that the men escaped by scaling his back fence because he found two $20 bills and a $500 bill in that area.
He said too that a few DVDs were also recovered in an empty lot nearby.
Singh said he had just stocked up for the Christmas season as he was expecting business to pick up. He said his losses were significant.
The police were informed and responded promptly. The two guards have been taken into custody and are assisting with investigations.
