The region four administration says it is fully prepared and has systems in place to combat any flooding which may occur in low-lying areas along the coast during the upcoming December-January rainy season.
In a press release yesterday the region said Regional Executive Officer Shafdar Ali noted that more than $80 million from both the region’s capital and current expenditure has been spent to upgrade drainage and irrigation in the agriculture sector this year.
Servicing and repairs to sluices and pumps are among works currently under way in this regard. Some of the major projects include the construction of greenheart revetment at Cane Grove and Hope on the East Bank Demerara and the rehabilitation of canals at Clonbrook, Two Friends, Buxton and Beterverwagting, the statement said.
Alli said too that to date, the weeding and cleaning of trenches within the Buxton/Foulis, Unity/Vreeniging, Soesdyke and other areas have been completed. Maintenance work in each Neighbourhood Democratic Council within the region is also said to be moving apace while the administration will continue to monitor all drainage and irrigation structures and pumps across the region.
The regional administration has also since rectified the malfunctioning sluice door at Brickery, East Bank Demerara at a cost of some $4.5M.
