Dear Editor,
Two days ago I had reason to be passing the Company Path Gardens where the Non-Aligned Monument stands, and was very shocked to notice that large sections of the fence were missing. Someone or some persons are removing the steel rods from the fence, and this, Editor, is a national disgrace. Now, here we have a national heritage site being vandalised and no one seems to care. I know for a fact that the Mayor and City Council is responsible for the upkeep of this garden; am I to believe that the authorities did not notice that people were stealing the fence, probably to sell as scrap iron? If they knew that people were doing so why did they not alert the public so that all of us could be on the look-out for those persons who are destroying our national pride.
I am kindly asking the city council to explain to the public why is it they are tolerating vagrants sleeping in the Company Path Gardens, both day and night.
This activity must stop now! We cannot have vagrants sleeping and cooking in the Company Path Gardens. Come on, Mr Mayor, I suppose you were in the decision-making forum when that garden was being planned, and I’m sure you knew its purpose, so let’s start policing this area and help to preserve our national monument.
I know that despite our many difficulties and differences, Guyanese are a very proud people.
Yours faithfully,
Clive Fredericks
