The Annual Guyoil sponsored Medal Play golf tournament is set to tee off tomorrow at the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC) from 12 pm.
Most of the country’s top players are registered to compete in what is expected to be the penultimate tournament of the 2008 season.
Secretary of the LGC Ronald Bulkan said that 2008 was a very hectic year for the club and he expressed gratitude to corporate sponsors who helped in making the tournaments a reality.
Bulkan said the weather was kind for most of the season and even when it rained, players were still eager to attend and compete.
This year saw the record participation in the Smirnoff sponsored Guyana Open tournament, with 72 players competing in the prestigious two-day championships that attracted competitors from Canada, United States of America and Suriname.
However, the local players dominated winning all four flights in the men’s competition, as well as the ladies playoff which meant the foreigners left empty handed.
Bulkan said that this weekend’s tournament is also expected to be well attended as the season winds down.
Among the players expected to grace the course are Bulkan, Bolaram Deo, Patrick Prashad, Imran Khan, Christine Sukhram, Mike Mangal, Clifford Reis, Ayube Subhan, Colin Ming, Brian Glasford, Maurice Solomon and Joann Deo.
Also slated to compete are Brian Hackett, Jerome Khan, Andre Cummings, Carlos Adams, Dr. Ram Singh, Mike Mangal, Chatterpaul Deo, Gavin Todd, Mark Lashley and Esau Shamshudin.
Representatives of the sponsors are expected to be on hand to assist in the presentation of prizes at the end of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Bolaram Deo with 40 points won last Saturday’s Scotia Online Internet Banking sponsored Stableford Golf tournament played at the LGC from Subhan also on 40 points, following a countback.
Third place was taken by Shamshudin who secured 38 points. Subhan also won the Closest to the Pin prize, while Monaff Arjune secured a prize for the Longest Drive.
