A man who allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Nineteen-year-old Darius Barrington of 643 Block X, South Sophia pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person.
It is alleged that on December 4, Barrington stole a gold chain valued $30,000 from Shonette Greene.
Greene, who was also in court, stated that she was proceeding west along Brickdam when Barrington who was riding his bicycle in the opposite direction rode up to her and snatched her gold chain. She said that she started screaming and Barrington fell off the bicycle. Greene told the court that Barrington got up and started running but a taxi driver chased after him and apprehended him on South Road and handed him over to the police. Barrington was arrested and later charged.
However, Barrington stated that “I dey going to wuk when I get frame charge.” He said that he did not snatch Greene’s gold chain but “I wan finish de story so I gon pay foh de chain.”
The magistrate ordered that Barrington be remanded to prison and that he appear again in court on December 9 with the money to recompense Greene for the chain.
