Top teams and performers awarded

All top teams and top individual performers at  the recently concluded Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Cellink Plus sponsored Premier League competition, were rewarded on Thursday evening in the conference room of the Water Chris Hotel.

The entire team of repeating champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United including their coach Wayne Dover and president Odinga Lumumba were present to receive for the second time, the Cellink Plus trophy ahead of second place finishers Sunburst Camptown.

Third and fourth place finishers Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Fruta Conquerors had their respective representatives present to receive their awards also.

Fruta Conquerors custodian Oswald Cornette was awarded the Most Outstanding Goal Keeper award, GDF’s Stellon David finished as the tournament’s top scorer after finding the back of the net 13 times, out of the tournament’s total of 162 from 56 matches.

Alpha’s Leon Grumble copped the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for leading his team to another championship win.

The Santos Football Club with a second division status was voted as the Most Disciplined team in a tournament that saw a total of 124 yellow and 16 red cards being shown, while Georgetown Football Club (GFC) was adjudged the Most Improved team.

The top rated premier league commenced on April 18th and ran for some 16 weeks, before it culminated on October 26th, where Alpha emerged as the victors.

They took home a cash prize of G$500,000 along with their trophy, whilst Sunburst Camptown had to settle for $250,000. The third and fourth place finishers bagged $150,000 and $100,000 each respectively.

At the GT&T branded ceremony, Marketing Executive Wystan Robertson in his brief remarks observed that in comparison to the way other tournaments are run, this one could be Guyana’s highest rated tournament.

“It is important that organizers strive for greatness and it is on you the players to maintain a high standard of discipline to give this tourney the opportunity to develop,” Robertson added before congratulating the entire Alpha United family on another premier league success.
