Your lead story about the leadership turmoil in the PNCR makes interesting reading ‘Corbin should step down, McAllister says’ Sunday Stabroek 7.12.08).
Guyana’s future lies in the hands of its collective political leadership. I want to see an Indo-Guyanese lead the PNCR, and an Afro-Guyanese lead the PPP/C. So Robert Corbin should give way to Winston Murray and Donald Ramotar should give way to someone like Mr Collymore or Robeson Benn.
Better yet, the PPP/C should invite Raphael Trotman to lead the party, and the PNCR should invite Khemraj Ramjattan to lead them. Even Stanley Ming as head of either party would go a long way to healing the massive divides that fuel ethno-racial conflicts and perceptions in the society. This great divide contributes significantly to the crime situation today.
Robert Corbin should indeed step down. I never agreed that Corbin should have ever led the PNCR, especially given his past roles under the previous administration. People like Corbin and Green should not have any position of power in a new Guyana. They fuel too much divisive perception.
Is there someone already entrenched in the power structure of Guyana who can mediate this kind of reform? Would someone with clout in the society who has the character and credibility for such mediation start the talks?
A GUARD kind of role is needed at this point, but who will lead it to achieve the goal? This could be the most achievable formula to elevate Guyana to its greatness as a nation.
