A recent shipment of medical equipment for the National Ophthalmology Centre at Port Mourant, is currently being installed as the ministry hopes to start operations at the centre next year.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) quoted Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran as saying that much of the equipment arrived on Friday and the “bio-medical technicians and the bio-medical engineers” are currently installing it. Ramsaran said too, that over the past weeks the ministry and the Region Six Regional Health Authority have been doing some “civil works” at the centre.
Ramsaran said other shipments are expected and government will provide the necessary support. According to GINA, the minister made these disclosures at the official opening of the Fourth International Scientific Meeting for Guyana and Cuba and the seventh Scientific Meeting of the Cuban Medical Brigade hosted at the Guyana International Convention Centre.
Meanwhile, housing for the 40-member Cuban medical team that will manage the centre has been completed. The minister said too that during a recent inspection of the facilities, Cuban Charge d’Affaires Pedro Arteaga said he was pleased with the work done at the centre.
According to GINA Ramsaran and Arteaga were accompanied by five Cuban ophthalmologists.
