Last evening Holmes Street, Tiger Bay, defeated a determined Albouystown team in a heart-stopping final to become the champions of the Georgetown Football Association organized Guinness `Greatest of de Street’ football competition.
A packed National Park Tarmac witnessed the two hundred thousand dollar Golden Goal that caused Tiger Bay to take the competition’s top honours.
They also witnessed the clean sweep inflicted by East Front Road on Globe Yard.
Following the entertainment session that featured First Born and Michelle `Big Red’ King, the final got underway and immediately close encounters of the `missed-goal’ kind, by both teams had the spectators on the edge of their seats.
Despite all the near misses, when the first half concluded, neither team had scored.
The second half was much of the same but Holmes Street was fortunate to squeeze one past the defense in the 33rd minute from a Solomon Austin strike.
With just seven minutes remaining, Albouystown’s effort to equalize was thwarted by the super charged Holmes Street defense which seemed intent on not letting the chance of claiming the competition’s top prize slip from their grasp.
At the regulation time whistle, the reality of the $200,000 dollars going home with Tiger Bay had to be swallowed by the Albouystown team and supporters who settled for the runner up prize of $100,000.
In the third place shown between Globe Yard and East Front Road the first half belonged entirely to East with two stunning early goals from Andy Duke, who scored in the fifth minute and Devon Cassius, who was successful in the 13th minute.
The second half saw no other goal being scored by either team with Globe Yard intensifying their attacks with hopes of getting back in the game but they were denied by the solid defensive display by East Front Road in the final 20 minutes of play to cart of the third place prize of $50,000.
