Dear Editor,
Among the many ills that have emerged in our society in recent times, is the scourge of violence against women. The males in our society have devised the most heinous and brutal ways to either harm or end our women’s lives.
A recent incident: a women is brutalized by her paramour or child father; he is arrested and placed before the courts, but unfortunately the battered lady refused to give evidence against him; he is the breadwinner for the family, and his incarceration will affect her. God forbid, she may soon become a police statistic.
I give up on tales of the fair maiden and her knight in shining armour, whose sole aim was to protect the lady fair, from all evil and wrongdoing. Any man who struck a female was deemed a coward. Any woman regardless of her status in society was afforded the courtesy and protection due to her − how the world has changed!
Back to our battered lady; that arm of the state which condemns violence against women should have been there to assure her of the state’s intention to assist her while the so-called breadwinner was serving time in prison.
I do hope that the Minister of Human Services and Social Security will take into consideration the plight of the many women who have been and are constantly battered by the men in their lives, but are afraid to end the relationship, because of their dependency on them for their economic survival.
Yours faithfully,
CS Vaughn MSM
