A 41-year-old Alberttown man who allegedly broke into two stalls and stole a quantity of items was granted $90,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when he appeared before her on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Junior McLean of Second Street, Alberttown pleaded not guilty to two counts of break and enter and larceny.
It is alleged that on December 11 McLean broke and entered the stall of Chaterpaul Bharrat and stole three bags of potatoes, a quantity of limes, ginger, and a pan scale among other items, totalling $112,000.
It is alleged that on December 11 also McLean broke and entered the stall of Hasmattie Puran and stole a basket of bananas, 500 plastic bags, a pan scale and several other items, totalling $31, 000. However McLean stated that “I know de man (Bharrat) and he know I wouldn’t steal anything from him.” He stated that on the day in question he was standing on the road talking to some people when they spotted the police and told him that they had a bag of potatoes that they had stolen earlier that day. McLean stated that the persons then fled the area while the police arrested him.
The prosecution made no objection to McLean’s bail application. The magistrate subsequently granted bail in the sum of $90,000 and ordered that he appear again in court on January 15.
