The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs today handed over a $7.3M tractor to three Deep South Rupununi communities to boost their agricultural prospects.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai handed over the key to the tractor to the toshaos of Karaudarnau, Achiwib and Parabara at a simple ceremony hosted at the ministry. GINA said the tractor was will be used to support the agricultural, transportation and construction needs of the communities and will also reduce the cost of food supplies.
The minister noted that as communities develop there are new demands for more resources which her ministry will facilitate. Sukhai said the tractor will help the communities to better engage in economic activities that will boost their production and stimulate the required resources.
In this regard she commended them for pooling their resources to their joint benefit. The communities will also be accessing a portion of their presidential grant to build a trailer for transportation purposes.
Toshao of Karaudarnau Arnold Stephens said he was grateful for the tractor since it will help his community in reducing transportation costs.
According to GINA, Aranaputa in the North Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and Whitewater in Region One (Barima-Waini) are soon to benefit from similar donations.
