In a farcical tournament titled the “President’s Cup” competition and organized by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and held at the Demerara Cricket Club ground in Queenstown it was the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) which played all the shots yesterday.
With Rohan Kanhai Strikers 162-4 after they were set a mammoth target of 351, play was called off at 4.02pm after the DCC said that they had to use the ground in preparation for their Gafoor’s-sponsored 20/20 match today against Nandy Park.
Scores in the match Clive Lloyd’s Super Cats 416 and 194-5 declared. Rohan Kanhai Strikers 260 and 162-4.
Earlier, the Clive Lloyd Super Cats team resuming on 16-1, soon lost opener Norman Fredericks for 15 to be 33-2 with Trevon Garraway taking both of the wickets.
But thereafter Steven Jacobs and the dependable Ranga Lachigadu set about rebuilding the innings.
The two added 139 runs for the third wicket before Jacobs soon after reaching his half century played an extravagant lofted shot over bowler Orin Forde’s head only to be taken by the safe hands of Maxie De Jonge for a 98-ball 54 which was decorated with eight boundaries.
Lachigadu, who had reached his half century when Jacobs was on 38, was joined by skipper Leon Johnson and the pair took the score to 170-3 at lunch.
Lachigadu was on 76 and had made the bowlers pay dearly for any short delivery.
His innings was punctuated with 10 fours and three massive sixes one of which sailed out of the DCC ground onto the Lance Gibbs Drive.
After lunch, though, Lachigadu became the second of Forde’s three wickets as going for quick runs he was caught by Garaway failing to add to his lunch-time total of 76.
Johnson and Deon Ferrier then took the score to 194 before Ferrier was adjudged leg before wicket (LBW) to Forde for 10.
With the fall of this wicket, Johnson promptly declared leaving the `Strikers’ to make 351 in less than three hours.
The Strikers lived up to their name when their second innings got underway at 17 minutes past one.
The opening pair of Krishna Arjune and Maxie DeJonge knuckled down to the task at hand and attacked the opening bowlers.
De Jonge opened his account by smashing deliveries from national fast bowler Esaun Crandon for two mighty sixes while Arjune carved out three fours at the start of his.
With the score on 36 Crandon had his revenge as De Jonge was adjudged LBW.
The in-form Gajanand Singh then Joined Arjune and they added 60 runs for the second wicket before Gajanand Singh was caught at bat/pad by Vishal Singh off the bowling of Zaheer Mohamed.
His innings of 38 was decorated with seven boundaries and the Strikers were 96-2.
Narsingh Deonarine en-tered and immediately used his experience gained from playing for the West Indies, racing to 26 with five fours before he was out-foxed by Jacobs who had him adjudged LBW.
Arjune, in the meantime, had moved from 42 to 50 with a four and a six and remained unbeaten on 54 at stumps.
Arjune’s innings was decorated with eight fours and a solitary six.
In between, Kellon Carmichael, who came off the mark with a boundary, was caught by Jacobs off the bowling of Ferrier while Anthony Bramble, one of many wicket-keepers used during the three-day match, was left unbeaten on four when the game was called off.
For the Super Cats Ferrier took 1-8, Mohamed 1-12, Jacobs 1-20 and Crandon 1-25. The next match will be between Clive Lloyd’s Super Cats and Lance Gibbs’ Tigers led by West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon from October 21-23 at the Georgetown Cricket Club, Bourda ground.
