Dear Editor,
I am totally fed-up with the serious drainage situation in Golden Grove Village on the East Coast of Demerara. After the last great flood in 2005, the relevant authorities promised to repair all kokers and dig all trenches and drains, but instead of doing this hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers’ money is being paid every month to Community Development Council workers to pamper the vegetation which impedes the free flow of water in the trenches and drains.
If some of the money paid to CDC workers was used to dig out the vegetation at least three times a year and the koker was repaired, then excess water would flow freely into the Atlantic Ocean and our village would not have been under water in December 2008.
The relevant authorities must be blamed for this flood and fully compensate all farmers.
Yours faithfully,
Brother Mark Nigel James
