The Guyana Boxing Board of Control has sent condolences to the Trinidad and Tobago Minister of Sport Gary Hunt as a result of the untimely death of women’s World boxing champion Jizelle Salandy.
The letter, signed by president of the GBBC, Peter Abdool, was copied to the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board (TTBB) and Salandy’s manager Boxu Potts.
Following is the text of the message:
Dear Honourable Minister and gentlemen all, It is with the heaviest of hearts that the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, extends our deepest condolences on the tragic passing of your champion and national heroine, Jizelle Salandy.
The pride which Jizelle brought to Trinidad was surely felt by every country in the Caribbean and certainly in Guyana where boxing is close to our hearts and where we have had the privilege of seeing her proficient skills on display early in her career and watch that career grow and blossom.
It is always deeply saddening to see a young life full of hope and promise tragically cut short. More so when so much has already been achieved and greatness loomed so brightly and with such seeming certainty on her horizon.
I am aware of Jizelle’s profound effect on the psyche of your nation and very aware of the enormous support and love she garnered. I know that your loss is deeply profound and whilst there is little solace in the knowledge, I am sure that you must know that for her, there was simply a higher calling.
Please express on our behalf to her family and friends and the people of Trinidad and Tobago, the heartfelt sympathies of our board, our entire boxing fraternity and all of our many boxing fans across Guyana.
Our thoughts and hearts are with you all at this saddest of times.
