Region Four Chairman Clement Corlette is calling on the management of the Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated to consider a reduction of toll for trucks bringing agricultural produce in the light of flood conditions, which are now affecting the agriculture areas in the region, resulting in steep prices.
In a statement issued yesterday, Corlette said flood conditions in agriculture areas in his region have had an adverse impact on local green vegetables and to some extent ground provisions.
Noting that a substantial volume of green vegetables from Region Six enters Region Four municipal markets for sale and distribution, Corlette said the apparent excessive toll charges for use of the bridge may further aggravate the situation resulting in higher prices for produce from Berbice.
He said the management of the bridge should, in addition to calculating returns on investment, consider affordability so the bridge could be used as a communication and transport facility.
Corlette said he felt the toll charges were too steep.
