A twenty-one-year-old employee of Swansea yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It was alleged that on January 13 at Georgetown, Randy Courtney of New Durban Backlands, who could not give a lot number, stole one Samsung cell phone valued $67,000 from Adana Stanton.
Stanton told the court that the defendant is no stranger to her and she really didn’t expect him to do what he did. “He would come at me and so, he is a family friend.” She explained that on the day in question, the defendant had gone to her house where they ate and talked for a while.
She said further that he had asked her for a call on her cell phone so she had given it to him. “After he asked me for the phone he then asked for a toothpick and when I turned away to get the toothpick for him, he ran away with the phone.”
Stanton subsequently raised an alarm and Courtney was apprehended and found with the phone.
Magistrate Robertson told the defendant, “I will send you to a place that has a proper address and lot number.” Bail was subsequently denied and Courtney is to return to court today when it is expected that he should by then know his lot number.
