Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Persid Edmond on Tuesday sentenced a security guard attached to the Health Ministry’s Fort Canje facility to two years jail after he pleaded guilty to stealing items amounting to over $188,000.
George Croft admitted a charge of break and enter and larceny at the New Amsterdam court.
According to the facts of the case between January 2 and 3, Croft broke into the ministry and stole one sewing machine valued $100,000, one DVD player worth $32,000 and six boxes of drinking glasses valued $36,000 along with other articles amounting to $188,525.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector, Satrohan Dayaram told the court that Croft was arrested in Georgetown but the articles have not been recovered.
In his defence Croft told the magistrate that he was sorry for committing the offences and she responded that “this is a typical case of cat being placed to watch milk.”
Meanwhile, Roger Hablim, a mason, was sentenced to two years jail for breaking into the dwelling of Shirley Bristol on December 8, and stealing one laptop computer valued $171,000, one DVD player worth $7,000 and other articles totalling $187,200.
In his defence, Hablim who is unmarried and has two children told the magistrate, “I know I thief the computer and a bag but I don’t know about the rest a things.”
The magistrate ordered that the items be returned to Bristol.
