Five constabulary officers attached to the Mayor and City Council, who allegedly assaulted a man and a woman, were all granted bail yesterday when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Sherwin Smith, 35, of D’Urban Backlands; Leon Isaacs, 38, of 72 West Ruimveldt and Neil Fernandes, 49, of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, all pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault and unlawful damage to property. Meanwhile Paula Jones, 41, of Lot 50 Bagotsville, West Bank Demerara and Paulette Devonish, 35, of West La Penitence both pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault.
It is alleged that on June 1 last year, Smith, Isaacs and Fernandes unlawfully assaulted Mark Kendall and damaged his jersey and vest valued $4,000.
It is also alleged that on the same day Jones and Devonish unlawfully assaulted Denise Fredericks.
The attorney representing the officers applied for bail on the grounds that they are all employees of the Mayor and City Council and the incident had occurred while they were executing their duties.
The prosecution made no objections to the bail applications but stated that Kendall had sustained injuries as a result of the assault.
The magistrate subsequently granted Smith, Isaacs and Fernandes bail in the sum of $75,000 each while Jones and Devonish were put on bail in the sum of $25,000 each. The five defendants have to return to court on February 25.
