In an effort to sustain projects across Guyana, the Mothers’ Union Diocese of Guyana yesterday launched a mobile snackette in front of the St George’s Cathedral.
The venture, which is in its initial stages, was made possible by a grant of $1.5M the organization received from its head office, Mary Summer House in London, UK as well as other donations.
According to the PRO of the organization, Vanessa Valz, the snackette will be initially opened for three days each week and a committee is being established to examine further plans as regards to the location of the snackette.
However, it will be located mainly in depressed communities and close to schools. Food items would be sold at prices lower than those at the main eating houses in Georgetown. Careful attention is being paid to the nutritional content of the foods on sale.
Preparation of the food items is being supervised by past head of the Carnegie School of Home Economics, Norma Washington along with other members of the organization who are holders of food handler’s certificates.
The opening of the snackette attracted the attention of school children from schools nearby as popular foods such as fried rice and chowmein along with finger foods were being sold at reduced prices.
The Mothers’ Union, has branches in 83 countries worldwide with approximately 3.6 million members and the Diocese of Guyana was launched in 1926 and now has branches in all 10 administrative regions countrywide.
