GNBS urges vendors, manufacturers to get registered

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is calling on importers of items like used tires, scale and other manufacturers and vendors to get registered and stamp all devices for the year.

In a press release the GNBS said dealers in used tyres and cellular phones need a permit to sell these commodities. The registration fees and cost for the permits are $30,000 and $20,000 respectively. Application forms can be obtained from the GNBS office located in the National Exhibition Centre, Sophia or they can be downloaded from its website located at www.gnbs.info Importers are required to give at least 24 hours notice to the inspectorate division when checks are to be conducted.

Importers and manufacturers are also required to be registered before the release of any of the following commodities; domestic electrical appliances, weighing and measuring devices, electricity meters, textiles, garments, footwear, ready-made garments, seat belts, safety matches, helmets, tyres, soap powder, paint and paint products, fertilizers, cigarettes, animal feeds, PVC pipes, wooden furniture, fluorescent lamp ballasts, gas stoves, Christmas tree and decorative lighting outfits and cell phones.

Additionally, vendors, retailers, shopkeepers, supermarket owners, rice farmers and millers, health personnel, post office and other users of scales, weights and measures are reminded to have their devices stamped and registered for the first half of the year in keeping with the requirements set out under the 1981 Weights and Measures Act.

The GNBS said imperial devices or devices in the dual mode, devices which are dirty or kept in a state of disrepair will not be stamped. The deadline for stamping is March 27.

According to the release stamping exercises are currently ongoing. This service is available at the Bureau’s office in Sophia or at its branch offices in Anna Regina, Region Two or at Vryman’s Erven in Region Six.

This service can also be had at any of the weights and measures offices located at the regional democratic council offices countrywide. The GNBS said a mobile stamping service is also being offered and the team is currently working along the East Coast at Industry, Lusignan, Enterprise, Enmore and the Mahaica markets.  For more information on the dates and times for mobile stamping the public is urged to contact the GNBS’s head office.
