A 34-year-old West Ruimveldt man was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment after pleading guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
On Monday Rohit Chand, also known as Benjie, broke and entered the house of Asser Alli and stole articles, including gold jewellery and a DVD player, totalling $118,000. According to Alli, the defendant gained entry to his house by removing a zinc sheet from his roof top.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith said that “on the day in question Alli had secured his home and left, only to find Chand in it when he returned.” The police prosecutor also related that Chand is not a first offender and had been imprisoned before.
Magistrate Robertson asked Chand what he had been previously imprisoned for and he responded “all sort a tings man.”
The magistrate then asked Chand what he was doing on Alli’s roof top. He responded, “My worship I been just standing up looking round.” When asked how long he was on the roof he said five minutes. She then asked him what job he does and he told the court, “I is do porter wuk all around.” So the magistrate then asked him if he was on Alli’s roof top doing some porter work, causing everyone in the courtroom to laugh, including Chand.
“Don’t you have a roof top where you are living?” the magistrate asked and when Chand responded yes, she advised him to go up on his own roof top the next time he decides to do some looking around from a roof top.
The magistrate then delivered the three-year sentence, and Chand asked, “My worship ah asking fuh a lil sentence less than duh please” but the magistrate’s decision was already final.
