Fast bowler Trevon Garraway and batsmen Homchand Pooran and West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon are all included for Guyana’s fourth round clash of the West Indies Cricket Board-sponsored four-day regional cricket competition against the Leeward Islands, which is set for Nevis next week-end.
Opener Krishna Arjune was not selected whilst Leon Johnson and Brandon Bess were not considered as they would be on duty with the West Indies ‘A’ team against the touring England team in St. Kitts.
The 25-year-old Garraway could feel himself unlucky not to be included in the 13 that was selected for the first two games.
His inclusion in the refreshed Travis Dowlin-led, 13-man squad – which is still missing West Indies middle-order batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan- would be a tremendous boost to a bowling attack which at times looked ordinary against the CCC team.
Garraway was the spearhead of last year’s bowling attack against the same opponents in St. Thomas and should be looking to prove the selectors wrong for not including him in the initial 13.
Like Garraway, Pooran must be counting his lucky stars, after being overlooked for the first two matches.
His intention was to quit the sport totally, but persuasion from some officials of the Berbice Cricket Board of Control changed his mind.
He was one of three batsmen to record centuries in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President’s Cup competition, and has always been a standout in local cricket, especially trial matches and will be eagerly looking forward to impress the selectors also.
Chattergoon had signalled his intention of playing against the Combined Campuses and Colleges team, but for unknown reason, pulled out at the last minute, even as team manager Carl Moore was making arrangements for him.
However, he is included for this encounter and with Shemroy Barrington at the top, Guyana can expect a better opening partnership from the two.
The middle-order will be shored up by Dowlin, with Narsingh Deonarine who missed out on his fifth first class century against CCC, Pooran, Royston Crandon and wicketkeeper Darwin Christian all able to lend support.
Christopher Barnwell too should finally get his chance to represent the country at this level. It was evident at the 3W’s Oval, that his all-round ability was lacking and though his batting is questionable at times, he would have certainly offered tremendous support to both Esaun Crandon and Bess in the fast bowling department on the fast Cave Hill wicket.
Should he be considered for this game, Steven Jacobs the former West Indies under-19 vice captain, can lend valuable support to both the batting and bowling department, especially with his off spinners.
Esaun Crandon will be sharing the new ball duties with Garraway, whilst spinners Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul are expected to do the bulk of the bowling for the Guyanese.
The 13-man squad for the game reads: Travis Dowlin, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Shemroy Barrington, Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, Steven Jacobs, Christopher Barnwell, Darwin Christian, Esaun Crandon, Trevon Garraway, Homchand Pooran, Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo.
Meanwhile, the senior selection panel of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), is asking the below mentioned players to continue training, with a view towards participating in the competition, as changes may be made to the present team.
They are; Arjune, Assad Fudadin, Gajanand Singh, Vishal Singh, Zaheer Mohammed, Delbert Hicks and Paul Wintz.
