A Timehri teen who allegedly stole a gold and diamond ring from another woman was granted bail yesterday when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Eighteen-year-old Parvina Seepersaud of Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny. It is alleged that between June 1 and November 31 last year, Seepersaud stole a gold and diamond ring valued $180,000, property of Bhagmatie Abdul.
Abdul, who was also present in court, said Seepersaud and her parents had offered her $20,000 for the ring. When she refused and reported the matter to the police station they then offered to give her $50,000 for it. She said she told them she wanted the exact value of her ring.
However, Seepersaud’s lawyer Sonia Parag said her client never offered Abdul to repay her for the ring. She said it was her client’s parents who had made the offer. Parag said her client denies stealing the ring from Abdul. The defence attorney then applied for bail stating that her client had no previous convictions in the court.
The prosecution made no objections to the bail application and it was subsequently granted in the sum of $70,000. The magistrate then transferred the case to Court Two for February 25.
