A fire scare at the Topco plant of Demerara Distillers Limited last evening saw a fire tender being summoned and senior company officials rushing to the scene, but there were no reports of major damage.
Reports reaching this newspaper are that close to 8 pm, smoke was seen coming out of a bond at the plant. It was thought that the problem was electrical in origin and power was quickly shut down and the fire service summoned. There was no visible damage to the outer structure of the plant, located at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, when this newspaper visited last evening. Several senior company officials turned up at the scene though they were unavailable for comment last night. After about an hour, the fire tender left the scene.
