The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) is demanding an immediate reduction in electricity tariffs given the falling oil prices.

Speaking with reporters yesterday, Acting General Secretary of the GTUC, Norris Witter said that with the dramatic fall in oil prices, there must be an immediate reduction in the rate of electricity.

He pointed out that other Caribbean Community countries such as Barbados and Jamaica have adjusted their tariffs to reflect the drop in fuel prices and questioned whether Guyanese do not deserve similar treatment.

The working people must not continue to pay for the inefficiency of the Guyana Power and Light, he said.
