– Holder to defend senior and junior titles
The cream of the country’s cyclists will be in action this Sunday from 8am when the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) 38th annual Mashramani cycle road race pedals off from the Demerara Harbour Bridge, proceeds to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, returning to finish at the starting line.
Former national junior road race champion Christopher Holder is the defending champion in both the senior and junior categories of the 40-mile event.
He won last year’s race in a time of 1:45:02.
Holder will, however, be hard pressed to retain the senior title with competitors such as the present Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports/Ministry of Health/National AIDS Commission five stage champion Junior Niles.
Add Alonzo Greaves, who started the year on a winning note having won the Ricks and Sari 16th annual cycle race around the inner circuit of the National Park, Robin Persaud, Darren Allen, John Charles and Leer Nunes, to name a few, and certainly Holder’s work is cut out.
The first six finishers will be receiving prizes as well as the first two junior finishers, and there will also be six sprint prizes up for grabs throughout the course of the race.
Director of Sports Neil Kumar will assist with the distribution of prizes to the various winners.
