Dochfour farmers helped by ministry

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the New Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC), continues to provide assistance to farmers who were affected during the recent flood. Heavy rainfall during the month of December left several communities around the country flooded affecting the livelihoods of several farmers in the process.

Last Saturday, farmers in the area of Dochfour, EBD were able to benefit from this assistance. Stabroek News was informed that this was the second such visit by the Ministry and its team to the community. Dochfour was one of the communities badly affected, since the community of mostly farmers was inundated for about four weeks. The water eventually receded early in the New Year.

During the latest visit by the team, farmers were presented with a quantity of seeds including bora, cucumber, pakchoy, lettuce and poi, and they were able to benefit from pesticides and fungicides. Fruit trees were also supplied as well as veterinary supplies.

The distribution was done in a systematic way so that only persons on an official list of persons who suffered losses during the flood were given supplies.

Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud was present as the distribution got underway and he said that he was pleased with how this particular post-flood exercise was going.

He said although the farmers had suffered a lot a deliberate effort was being made to ensure that those affected got back on their feet as soon as possible. He also emphasized that “Grow More Food “campaign, remained very much a priority even in spite of the recent adverse weather and flooding.
